Breaking news is a news event that warrants an immediate interruption of normal programming, in order to provide immediate coverage. Prior to the development of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions were typically reserved for major events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming for breaking news coverage. In such cases, stations would use a special ticker known as a “Newsflash” or “Special report”.[1] Lower thirds and other graphics are often altered to convey the urgency of the story.
