About Current News

Trending explores the stories making headlines around the world. We go beyond the initial reaction to find out what’s driving this change, and why it’s important.

A breaking news event is a topic of newsworthy importance that elicits national or international coverage and requires the interruption of non-news programming or, in some cases, regular network newscasts. This can happen on a short-term basis, or can last hours or even days. Typically, when a break in the news occurs, a network will send out a newsflash alert to its affiliates asking them to interrupt their current programming and switch to the national network feed.

When the story breaks, an announcer will usually welcome viewers to the network and introduce the breaking news. In recent years, major networks have begun using “Special Report” tickers for select breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.

The president fast-tracked research on psychedelic treatments and their therapeutic uses, but one group says it was only thanks to a text from a podcaster. NBC’s Hallie Jackson goes to New Mexico to shed light on why Jeffrey Epstein’s Zorro Ranch wasn’t searched sooner. Plus, the St. John’s booster who helped resuscitate the basketball team hopes to do the same for the baseball program.
