Trending is a term used by television networks to indicate the top stories that viewers are currently discussing. This type of breaking news coverage can be seen on both local and national cable, radio, and satellite television channels. Generally, a network will interrupt its regular non-news programming with the breaking story, while telling its affiliates to stand by. This will usually be followed by a countdown sequence, which allows affiliated stations to switch to the network feed for their own live coverage of the event. The network will then begin a newscast with a distinctive opening graphic and music cue.
