A special report is a news program or segment that interrupts normal programming to cover an event of significant importance. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such events were usually limited to severe weather events or national tragedies, which would often require multiple stations around the country to break from their regular programming. During breaking news coverage, a network will usually begin with a countdown sequence followed by the national signal of their television station affiliates announcing the change in programming and asking viewers to stand by for more information. Some networks also use lower thirds that can be inserted into normal programming to alert viewers of important news stories that may not need an actual cut-in or dedicated special report.
