Breaking News is a news event that occurs outside of regularly scheduled programming that warrants an immediate interruption to deliver breaking news or analysis. It is often accompanied by a graphic and distinctive music cue, similar to newsflash or special report, to alert viewers of the change in content. Breaking news may last a few minutes or several hours or days, depending on the nature of the story and its scope. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent news such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage that required numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming with a cut-in.
