Breaking news is a term used to describe events that are developing so rapidly that they require immediate nationwide coverage and force stations to interrupt regular programming in order to cover them. Until the advent of 24-hour cable and satellite news networks, these breaks were usually restricted to severe weather events or other major world developments such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. A typical breaking news break consists of a countdown sequence followed by a network feed and a graphic that alerts viewers to the change in programing. Then, a host or anchor announces the breaking story and provides a summary of it.
