A breaking news story is a news event that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or, in some cases, a live regularly scheduled network newscast). Breaking news is often broadcast using a graphic overlay and a distinctive music cue, and may be introduced by an on-air anchor. In the past, these breaks were reserved for events deemed so urgent as to warrant nationwide coverage and require numerous stations to interrupt their programming; in recent years, the use of breaking news has been expanded by 24-hour news networks which feature a live anchor available for interruption at any time. Previously, the term “newsflash” or “special report” were used; in both cases, these graphics served the same purpose of breaking news.
