Trending is a news feature that covers stories currently popular on social media. It may include topics ranging from sports to politics to celebrity gossip. When an event becomes widely discussed, it is added to the list of Trending topics and the trend is displayed on a large banner or on the right sidebar of the website. Trending is often seen on Twitter and Facebook. When the trend is clicked on, it will redirect to the article that has been linked to it. This feature was originally used in the days of broadcast television before 24-hour news networks existed. Breaking news events would interrupt non-news programming or, if the event was severe enough, even regular network newscasts. In such cases, the national network will usually alert its affiliates to stand by and pause its current non-news program or newscast so that the stations can switch to the network feed. This is typically done using a countdown sequence and a special graphics open and music cue.
