A bystander was also struck by gunfire in the incident, but it was not immediately clear how, the Secret Service said.

When a breaking news story occurs that is of sufficient importance to interrupt ongoing non-news programming, a network will typically alert its affiliate stations to stand by and prepare to switch to the national feed. The network will then present a live special report on the event, often with its own distinctive graphics and music cues that create a sense of urgency. This type of news coverage may last for only a few minutes or extend into multiple hours or days, requiring sustained reporting. In the past, this sort of cut-in was reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, but now is commonplace for 24-hour news channels.
