In television and radio news, a breaking news story is an event which requires the interruption of regular non-news programming (or, for network affiliates, of regularly scheduled network newscasts) to provide timely reporting. Typically, the program will interrupt at an appropriate point in its run and a news anchor will announce that breaking news is occurring. The broadcaster may use a distinctively-cued newsflash or Special report graphic to identify the story and its importance. Lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered to convey urgency. Breaking news may last for a short period of time or for hours and even days, depending on the nature of the story.
