Trending is a news segment that highlights current stories and events. Trending is often accompanied by graphics and music that emphasize the importance of the topic at hand. During breaking news, national network television programs will interrupt current non-news programming (and in some cases regular newscasts) to cover the story. The break is usually preceded by a countdown sequence for affiliates to join the network feed and an opening graphic, with a distinctive music cue, to indicate the onset of breaking news. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news coverage was limited to urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, and would be augmented by cut-ins or alert crawls during regular programming.
