Current News is a term used by media to describe a breaking story or a story about something happening in the world at that moment. It is often a story that reflects the current political situation or an event of interest to many people, although it can also be about less significant events.
The format of a breaking news report or special report on broadcast television typically consists of a series of cuts that may include a countdown to a pre-emptive interruption of non-news programming, an opening graphic featuring music (such as “The Pulse of Events”, composed by John Williams), a voiceover from an anchor introducing the story and a disclaimer for viewers who would like more details from the network’s news division. The story may be introduced by a live shot of the anchor, or it could be reported from a location near the location of the event (if possible), in which case the coverage will be passed to a local reporter for further analysis as the event unfolds.
In the United States, local television stations will normally interrupt their evening newscast to air a breaking news report; they may also start a new newscast in an early fringe timeslot for this purpose. This can be done via a cue from the talent that they will pause for a few seconds to reset coverage, or if the story occurs during the evening newscast, it may be automatically interrupted by a master control alert service – though some networks do not provide this for local stations, simply leading with a ‘breaking news’ graphics and voiceover.
