Trending is a feature on the home page of Current News that shows trending topics based on their popularity on the site. The trending topics are chosen by the website’s editors based on traffic and other factors. Typically, the trending topics are based on the latest news articles or other content that has been popular on the site. Occasionally, the trending topics are based on opinions expressed by users or other outside sources. A trending topic can also be a breaking news story that requires an immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, a network’s regularly scheduled newscast). For this type of event, the station usually has a special top of the hour graphic with a distinctive music cue called “Newsflash” or “Special report.” The national networks also have a dedicated feed for such events.
