Breaking news is a term used by television broadcasters to indicate an urgently developing story that warrants an interruption of non-news programming. Typically, a national network will alert its affiliates to the breaking news event and tell them to stand by; in addition, the network will usually pause its regular newscast during the interruption and provide the breaking news via a “Newsflash” or “Special report” graphic with distinctive music cues. In recent years, breaking news stories have been highlighted through lower thirds and other graphics during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for full-blown cut-ins.
