Breaking news is a short segment of a television or radio broadcast that interrupts non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) to cover a developing story with a high degree of urgency. It is usually accompanied by an alert that asks viewers to stand by for the interruption, and may also include a countdown timer or a special graphic open with distinctive music cues. Breaking news was once a rare event for broadcasts, but is now commonplace at 24-hour news networks that have dedicated anchors to break the news live.
