Current News is a term used to describe a breaking news story which warrants an interruption of non-news programming (or, in the case of network broadcasters, a pause or countdown for affiliates that may be interrupting their regular program feeds) to provide live coverage. It is a common practice in the world of 24-hour news channels, where a dedicated anchor is available to break news stories at any time. When a breaking news event is so serious that it requires a special break in programming, the usual station imaging promo or program reminder is replaced with a graphics element known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”. It may also use altered lower thirds and other graphic elements to convey urgency.
