When a news event warrants immediate or sustained coverage, the broadcaster will typically interrupt non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts) to present the breaking news. This is commonly known as a “newsflash” or “special report”, and is usually introduced with a distinctive opening graphic accompanied by a special music cue. In addition, the lower thirds or other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. In the past, breaking news was usually limited to events that elicited nationwide coverage and required many stations to interrupt regular programming; this practice has been lessened since the advent of 24-hour news networks, which can interrupt their own programming at any time.
