Current News is a term used in the United States and Canada for broadcast coverage of current events. It can take the form of live coverage, re-running segments from previous programming or pre-empting existing programming to report on a specific story that is currently of interest.
Breaking News
For a network or local station, a breaking news story typically occurs when an emergency or high-profile event takes place. Depending on the nature of the story, it may be brief or last for hours to days.
Often, the story is anchored by a news anchor or a reporter who is on location to cover the event. A live shot of the anchor may be shown, or if available, video and/or images will be shown in real time to show the news as it unfolds.
The format of a breaking news is usually similar to that of a newscast, with an opening graphic and music (such as NBC’s “The Pulse of Events”) adding to the impact of the announcement. The newscast will also pause for a few seconds, which allows affiliate stations to join the network’s feed.
The end of the breaking news story is typically a visual and audio call to action directing viewers to check out the network’s website or other outlets for additional information. For example, ABC’s breaking news story about the Shayrat missile attack included a call to action for viewers to check out the network’s news site or watch the video of the incident on YouTube.
