Breaking news is a term used to describe a story that is happening right now, or is of such importance that it warrants interruption of current programming (or occasionally, regular network-affiliated local newscasts). This type of breaking news event is normally the subject of a special report or a “Newsflash” (“special report” may also be used as an alternative) and often features a countdown graphic, distinctive music cue and an alert crawl that appears onscreen. Before 24-hour news channels became commonplace, this type of interruptive reporting was limited to major events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
