Breaking news is a term used to refer to an urgent event that necessitates the immediate interruption of current non-news programming, or occasionally, regular network newscasts. It is generally accompanied by a distinctive music cue, as well as altered lower thirds and graphics on the screen. Before the era of 24-hour news channels, breaking stories were restricted to extremely pressing events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or severe weather, which could require stations to interrupt for long-form reporting. Today, networks often use a “Newsflash” or special report graphic to alert viewers to a breaking story, eliminating the need for a cut-in during regular programming.
