Trending is a news segment that talks about what is happening around the world. It also covers the latest trends in fashion, beauty and lifestyles. Often, the trending topic is chosen by an audience poll or a panel of experts. This is a popular segment on most news programs. The report is accompanied by a distinct music cue and a graphic. It is usually followed by a news anchor talking about the topic. If the breaking news is particularly important, the national network may interrupt regular non-news programming or their affiliates’ locally produced shows to cover it live. This is known as a “Newsflash” or “Special report”. The interrupts are also used for severe weather events, but until the development of 24-hour news networks, cut-ins during regular programming were usually restricted to such high-end alerts as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
