Breaking news is the term for a current event that elicits national or local news coverage, and requires the interruption of non-news or regular programming. In the past, such breaks were rare and restricted to extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which prompted many stations to suspend programming. Breaking news is often accompanied by an opening graphic and distinctive music cues, as well as a special version of the network’s ticker, which may be overlaid on top of lower thirds or other graphics. A similar type of breaking news is a severe weather event that requires an immediate, live broadcast.
