Breaking news is a term used to describe urgent, timely stories that require the interruption of non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts). Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were typically reserved for very serious events requiring immediate coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. When a breaking story is reported, the network feed of the affected station or stations will usually pause for a countdown sequence, with a distinctive music cue to signal that programming will be interrupted.
