A breaking news story is a television or radio news event that occurs so rapidly and with such urgency that it requires the interruption of ongoing non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts) to report on. This type of break is often signalled by a countdown sequence, or by a network-wide alert that tells affiliates to “stand by.” Upon breaking, the network feed then opens with a special graphic and distinctive music cue. The story may last only a few minutes, or may continue for multiple hours, even days. In North America, until recently, such breaks were rare outside of severe weather events or for national tragedies such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
