Article Talks About Trending

When a news event occurs that warrants immediate coverage and interrupts current non-news programming or, in the case of national network newscasts, regular schedules, stations typically alert their affiliates that an emergency break is in progress and to stand by. The network may then begin a countdown sequence, allowing affiliated stations to switch to the network feed. After the break, a news anchor will usually welcome viewers to breaking news coverage, which is often enhanced with a distinctive opening graphic and special music cues. In recent years, networks have also begun using “Special Report” tickers for selected breaking stories during regularly scheduled programs, lessening the need for such break-ins.
