Breaking news is news events that require immediate coverage and often necessitate an interruption of regular non-news programming or, in the case of 24-hour news channels, regularly scheduled newscasts. Such an interruption may last a few minutes, or it may be longer, such as for the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which prompted a nationwide interruption of television and radio broadcasts. A national network will usually alert its affiliated stations of a breaking news event by interrupting current non-news programming, and then display a countdown sequence to indicate how long the network feed will be interrupted. The network’s feed may also be interrupted via a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker.
