Breaking news is a term used by broadcasters to indicate that an event occurring in real time warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming and/or a national network newscast. The network feed is usually paused for a brief countdown sequence, followed by the opening graphic and distinctive music cue, or a newsflash or special report. Depending on the nature of the story, breaking news coverage may last a few minutes, or may continue for hours or even days. In recent years, many networks have opted to use “Special Report” tickers to show breaking news during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
