Breaking news is a news story that demands immediate coverage, often overriding regular programming or a national network’s live feed. Such stories are typically accompanied by an alert, sometimes referred to as a Newsflash or Special Report (see those entries for more), and are displayed on-air through lower thirds or other graphics with a distinctive music cue. Before 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were typically reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which necessitated nationwide coverage and forced numerous stations to interrupt their non-news programming. [4] Since then, many broadcasters have adopted specialized “Special Report” tickers for breaking stories that can be interrupted during regularly scheduled programming.
