Breaking news is used to describe the most important story of the day. Whether it’s an important story from today’s perspective or one that will happen tomorrow, breaking news is an essential component of the news cycle. Breaking news also applies to stories that are of wide public interest but have not been reported yet by a news organization. The term is sometimes used instead of breaking news, and is sometimes used in reference to no news at all.
Breaking news may interrupt prime time programming, especially if it interrupts highly-rated shows or new programming. In some cases, the event may be so important that local stations may opt to join on the “extended edition.”
During the broadcast of a breaking news story, the network or local news station will keep the live shot of the anchor during the break. The local station may cut to a video to cover the story. The anchor may then remind viewers to check the network’s website or local cable news channels to get more updates. However, if a breaking story is the main topic of the news, then the network will switch back to the current newscast, and continue to provide updates.
