Breaking news is news that is so important and timely that it requires immediate or ongoing coverage by television and radio stations. It may require the station to interrupt its regular programming (such as non-news programming or, until the development of 24-hour cable and satellite news networks, regularly scheduled network newscasts). When breaking news occurs, a special graphics package with an alert music cue is used, which may be branded with the network’s name.
