Current News is a term used in television and radio news to refer to an urgent story which warrants the interruption of non-news programming. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, these interruptions were typically reserved for breaking news stories such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or severe weather events which demanded nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt regular programming in order to relay the information. The break usually begins with a special graphics sequence and distinctive music cue, followed by a news anchor reporting on the event. The network may also use lower thirds and other graphics to convey a sense of urgency.
