Unlike the network’s main news program, which can last for several hours, breaking news usually only lasts for a few minutes. Depending on the length of the coverage, networks may choose to integrate the story into the main program, start a new program at the point of interruption, or re-air segments not aired.
The term “breaking news” is used to describe an event that is of national or international importance. It may refer to a recent event or a newsworthy old story.
