“Ukraine is a tragedy of monumental proportions, but it could actually be worse,” Israel’s Prime Minister-designate, Benjamin Netanyahu, said of the potential nuclear escalation of the war in Ukraine on Meet the Press. “In three-quarters of a century, we have not crossed that threshold. We must not cross that threshold.”

‘Breaking news’ is a term that’s used to describe a story that’s capturing the imaginations of viewers. These stories can last for hours, days or even weeks.
When a news event breaks, local stations have the option of breaking away from the network feed and reporting the story themselves. This is usually the best way to deliver local news. If the event happens during prime time, the network may interrupt programming to air the breaking news.
The network may also incorporate a full analysis of the story. This type of coverage is usually accompanied by an internal alert service, which disseminates the information to all affiliates.
A “special report” is another term that may be used to describe a story that breaks in the press. These reports usually include an internal alert service as well as an internal countdown.
The “special report” is a common format in which the lower thirds are changed to convey a sense of urgency. In the most basic of news reports, the lowest third may just say “breaking news” and redirect viewers to the news program.
A reverse countdown is also a common feature on television, but local stations don’t usually offer it. A reverse countdown is usually five seconds. If the countdown is longer, it may be rolled over to the next time slot or the next episode of the show.
“Breaking news” is a slang term for a story that breaks earlier than normal. It’s often used in place of “just in” or “just in time,” but it’s also not uncommon to hear the terms “breaking news” and “just in time” used in the same sentence.
