Breaking news is an announcement by television or radio networks that an important event is occurring, usually requiring the immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, in the case of a national network broadcast, their regular scheduled newscast). The network then typically pauses its feed for a countdown sequence, allowing affiliated stations to switch over to their breaking news report, often with a distinctive graphic and a dramatic music cue. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were normally reserved for exceptionally urgent events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
