A new generation of streaming news networks are betting on the success of online video streaming. In addition to offering documentaries, these networks also provide regular nightly news programs. These shows allow viewers to tune in and view content when they want, wherever they are.
The news networks are hoping that these programs will draw new viewers to their programming, and they have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the new business. Some experts predict that online video will reshape political coverage. This, in turn, may lure a Fox News Channel into the streaming game.
While cable TV has had success in one-upping broadcast news, it hasn’t done the same with streaming. Instead, it has repurposed existing programming. Now, viewers have the option of a range of different choices, all of which could feed their polarization.
Streaming has also proven to be a popular way to attract a mass audience, according to some industry observers. It’s less expensive than television, and a majority of households subscribe to at least one streaming service.
Several news networks have begun to stream local news, including CBS News, which plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news into homes in 2022. ABC has also entered the streaming space.
Similarly, NBC News has launched its NBC News Now program. It provides 31 million hours of content a month, and the vast majority of its audience is under 45.
Another major streaming network, Cheddar, has planted a flag in the streaming frontier. In the fall, it hosted a Digital Humanities Student Showcase to celebrate students’ innovative work using digital tools.
