A Breaking News event is a news story of such urgency that it requires national network television and radio stations to interrupt their regular programming (and sometimes, in cases of severe events, also the networks’ regular newscasts). A break will usually start with a countdown sequence indicating how much time until a broadcast of a breaking news event begins. This may be followed by a special graphic and distinctive music, identifying the type of breaking news. After the network feed starts, any affiliated local stations will be asked to “stand by,” awaiting the break to join.
