Breaking news is live television or radio coverage of urgent, developing stories which may not be fully understood or reported at the time of transmission. It may require an interruption of regular programming, with a countdown graphic to allow network affiliates to switch to the breaking news feed before it begins. Breaking news reports are often accompanied by special graphics and music, to convey the urgency of the story. This type of news was rare before 24-hour cable and satellite news channels, and even then it was generally limited to events requiring nationwide coverage such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
