Breaking news is a term used by broadcast journalists to indicate a story that warrants an immediate interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network television, regularly scheduled network newscasts). Such breaking stories may be presented as a “Newsflash” or “Special report”, depending on the severity and urgency. In the United States, breaking news is often accompanied by a countdown sequence that begins to play on network affiliates, alerting them to prepare for an interrupt of their regular programming. The breaking news is then introduced by a network anchor. In addition, lower thirds and other graphics are altered to convey a sense of urgency.
