The term “trending” is used by the Current News team to highlight a range of stories that are being discussed on NPR. These stories may have been breaking the previous day, or they could be gaining in popularity online and on social media. Generally, these stories aren’t considered newsworthy enough to interrupt regular programming (although this can sometimes occur when a story is especially urgent). This is often done on national network newscasts, with the pause allowing affiliate stations to join the feed. The break is accompanied by an opening graphic and distinctive newsflash music cue, and lower thirds are usually altered to indicate the urgency of the report.
