Trending is the term used for a news event that is popular in social media, either through the mainstream or niche outlets. The story is then used in the newscast to create a sense of urgency and importance to viewers. The story is often accompanied by a graphic overlay, and sometimes lower thirds and other graphics are altered to convey the significance of the event. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, broadcasters only interrupted regular programming for breaking stories of national importance, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 or a natural disaster. A break in network news normally begins with a countdown sequence.
