Trending is a news segment that talks about current events that are currently being discussed in the media. The segment often is accompanied by graphics that are designed to emphasize the importance of the story. It may be introduced with a station imaging promo that has a special music cue. The segment typically is aired during regular programming, such as regularly scheduled network newscasts or on local radio stations. Depending on the severity of the event, it may be interrupted and continue for hours or even days.

Until recently, TV and radio stations only interrupted non-news programs for breaking news that was immediate or highly urgent. During such an interruption, a special graphic or alert crawl might appear to signal to viewers that they should turn to a different program for the duration of the break. This was more common before 24-hour news networks were established.
