Trending is a segment on Current News that talks about the latest trends in a variety of categories. These can include popular music, celebrities, fashion, and other categories. This segment usually starts off with an image or video, and then is followed by a quick summary of the category being discussed. Occasionally, a short segment about a trending topic may be used on a regular non-news program or even a regularly scheduled newscast. This type of interruption is known as a breaking news story, and is often signified by an opening graphic with distinctive music cues. Previously, such breaks were reserved for news events that required immediate attention, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
