Trending is a segment of television and radio programming that focuses on breaking news stories. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news events required stations to interrupt regularly scheduled programs in order to cover them. Breaking news usually starts with a scrolling ticker or lower third, followed by an opening graphic that is often designed to convey urgency through color and motion. Depending on the nature of the story, the breaking news may last only a few minutes or continue for several hours or even days. In the case of weather emergencies, this may include extended coverage with on-air forecasters.
