A roiling winter storm causes travel to come to a standstill in the Northeast. NPR’s correspondents reflect on a far-flung and jam-packed Olympic Games. And conservation biologist and explorer Steve Boyes discusses his new National Geographic film about the elusive giant squid.
Breaking news is a segment of a broadcast that interrupts non-news programming for urgent and time-sensitive events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage and required many stations to break away from their regular programming. In the days of 24-hour news networks, breaking news is often signalled by an on-screen graphic and a countdown sequence. In addition to the aforementioned, lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered to convey urgency.
