Breaking news is live television or radio coverage of an event that happens immediately or that is so important that it warrants an immediate interruption of regular programming. This type of breaking news is often presented in the form of a ticker or a special report, and is usually preceded by a countdown sequence and a distinctive music cue. Before 24-hour news networks existed, such interruptions were typically reserved for events that required nationwide coverage and a corresponding need for numerous stations to interrupt their normal programming. Examples include the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which prompted a national break in the television and radio networks for nearly an entire day. Other examples include severe weather emergencies, such as a tornado warning or landfalling hurricane, that require a complete program interruption.
