Streaming news is setting the stage for a dramatic reshaping of the news landscape. The online video streaming revolution is likely to bring in overtly political news operations, as well as a host of new, non-political alternatives.
Streaming news has already proven its worth to both mass audiences and niche groups. It allows viewers to choose how they receive news, and it travels wherever the viewer goes.
Streaming news also allows broadcast news to become less expensive, as it eliminates the costs of storing and archiving the news. It also makes it more affordable to build a news library. The major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations.
As news networks realized that a streaming audience could help them build profitable businesses, they began investing in streaming. They repurposed broadcast programming and offered documentaries, news analysis, and reruns. They also scheduled regular nightly news programs.
News networks sensed an advantage in serving a streaming audience, but they also had to avoid establishing a new free outlet. That left Andrew Morse, the head of CNN+, with no chance to experiment with the formula.
The news networks were also hesitant to overhype streaming. A recent study found that viewers spent more time watching streaming programs than they did on broadcast TV. That could mean that audiences were more prone to sink deeper into political silos, just as they were with cable.
CNN, Fox, and MSNBC each earned a combined profit of $3 billion in 2020. If this trend continues, they will likely be able to build their business without any restrictive licenses.
