Trending is a news item or feature that has gained prominence in recent times. A trend may rise in popularity or may be a reaction to an event, such as the death of a celebrity. Trending is often seen on social media. Trends can be a factor in the scheduling of newscasts or other programs. When a story is considered to be breaking, national network television stations will interrupt regular non-news programming or, for a live newscast, the network feed may pause before an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. This is known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”. Breaking news can also be displayed on TV and radio station tickers during regularly scheduled programming, avoiding the need for an interruption.
