In broadcasting, breaking news is an urgent, time-critical story that necessitates a national network to interrupt non-news programming (or even regular daily network newscasts) and issue an alert to its affiliated stations, asking them to “stand by for break.” If the event warrants it, the network will then provide a special report from an anchor or other news source. This type of reporting is also referred to as a “Newsflash” or a “Special report.” Before the existence of 24-hour news networks, these breaks were typically reserved for national tragedies such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or severe weather events such as hurricanes or tornadoes that require widespread coverage and immediate response.
