About this Article
Trending talks about what’s making headlines in the world of news and entertainment. This can include anything from new celebrity gossip, to the latest political developments. It can also cover cultural events or interesting facts. For example, one trending topic recently was the death of actor Robin Williams. Another was the upcoming release of “Star Wars: The Mandalorian.”
Breaking News
In the United States, breaking news is television or radio coverage of an urgent event that warrants a temporary interruption in regular programming. Such events may be major – such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage requiring numerous stations to interrupt programming – or they may be minor, such as the cancellation of a television show due to technical difficulties. In either case, a station or network will typically alert affiliates to the breaking news event by using an open with distinctive music and a countdown sequence. Then, the program will pause or interrupt with an introductory graphic that contains key information about the event and which will be used as an overlay on lower thirds and other graphics during the newscast.
