Trending
A trending topic is a story that has gained significant traction in social media or among news organizations. Often, this is due to a recent event or ongoing issue that is generating attention from the public, as well as from critics and commentators. Trending stories may be featured on the homepage of a website, and some networks have dedicated trending pages for their own programming as well.
Breaking News
Breaking news is a type of live report that interrupts regular non-news or scheduled news programming on television or radio to cover events as they occur. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were rare and used only for highly urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 or severe weather events such as a tornado warning. The breaking news report is usually identified by an alert on the bottom of the screen, a countdown sequence and an opening graphic and music cue. Similar reports are also known as Newsflash and Special report.
